If you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen a post of mine from a few weeks ago for the international day of women and girls in science. In the post, I wrote a very brief time line about how me, art and science have forged a bit of a path together throughout my life.
It went like this:
When I was 18 I dropped out of art school and went to university to study biology.
When I was 21 I was an intern at Kew gardens seed bank project and I made displays for school kids to learn about the research we were doing.
When I was 22, I realised I wasn’t cut out for life in the lab and needed to work in the creative industries.
When I was 26, I worked for a creative agency that made apps for sales reps in the pharmaceutical industry.
When I was 30, I designed an app to help women understand what immunisations they would need during pregnancy.
When I was 37, I illustrated a non-fiction book for @wattsandwayland_books (out soon!) about how we are affected by the genes we inherit, and by the world around us.
Now, at 38 and a half and I have written and illustrated the first three chapters of a middlegrade story with science and strong female characters at the heart of it.
I’m excited to announce that the illustrated non fiction book, Science and Me, is out on 23rd March! This was one of the first book deals I secured as an illustrator, and as science has been such a big part of my life, it felt so perfect to work on this book. I am so happy with how it has come out and hope you like it too!
I’ll share a few more sneaky peeks on publication day, but I was just so excited to hold a copy in my hands I wanted to share it with you all right away!
I am in last minute organisation mode for Bologna at the moment, but don’t worry, I will do a big in depth review of the fair afterwards. Are you going to be at the fair? Get in touch! If you’re not, maybe there’s something you’d like to know about, in case you plan to visit in the future? If there is then let me know in the comments. I have a few more ideas for some useful posts to do later this month as well so make sure you are subscribed so you can get this newsletter straight to your inbox.
Science and Me!
Congratulations!!!
Congratulations! Yay Science & yay you!
